Day 6: Message From Sharon Goodnow

Only our Pastors could place a night of food, fellowship and laughter in the midst of a Daniel Fast. That alone made the evening begin with an inner anticipation of , “What next God?”

How delightful it was to fellowship at last night’s “Laugh Your Way to a Better Marriage.” Our hosts, Pastor and Yolanda Duley had the event catered. “But the church is on a Daniels Fast”, I thought… I think they love to do what no one expects! I was surprised by both our wonderful appetizer spread and the evenings DVD. But I don’t want to get ahead of myself…

The couples came into the fellowship little by little and as they did our caterer and her husband began to deliver beautiful platters of food. She created food in line with our fast, both savory and sweet. For a moment I saw what looked like chocolate-chocolate chip cookies and said to myself “IT’S A COOKIE!” In actuality it was a bean wafer with a dollop of sauce and itsy bitsy pieces of pineapple on top. (yummy) There was platter after platter of delightfully tasty creations made just for us. Whew! It was a happy surprise. I actually wondered if we could have a fellowship with healthy food and enjoy it… And everyone did.

You could hear laughter and talking through-out the fellowship hall. After sampling one of everything at the tables…okay, that’s a lie…it could have been 2, maybe 3) But seriously, I didn’t know Daniel Fast food could taste so good! The conversation inevitably came around to how everyone was doing on the fast. There were comparisons, sharing, discoveries and challenges shared. We are blessed to have one another. It was a half hour of laughter, eating, drinking (water) and fun.

Okay, this is the best part. Now it’s time to go into the sanctuary for our DVD. Pastor welcomes everyone (well, not everyone because “you” weren’t there…and you know who you are, we missed you!) and I look up in the middle of his welcome over his shoulder and see the word “SEX”, mm-hmm, yes I said sex! I was peddling my bike through this entire evening and came to a complete halt. I’m not sure what he said in his prayer but I did hear the, “Amen.” And so begins our lesson…

Our speaker began to share that he was going to teach married couples the path to the best sex ever! As he spoke there were no snickers, muffled laughter or heads turning to see if anyone saw them give a knowing smile… We were hysterical! It was awesome to hear the truth about sex spoken with such honesty, openness and humor. That sex within marriage was the God inspired plan! God created us, sex and the directions, the know-how and the mapping to do it well and Christians have the potential to have the “best sex ever!” How is that for inspirational!

You know friend, God does all things well. We can place the mundane to the ridiculous in His hand and He doesn’t even blink!

20Now to Him Who, by (in consequence of) the [action of His] power that is at work within us, is able to [carry out His purpose and] do super-abundantly, far over and above all that we [dare] ask or think [infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, hopes, or dreams]-- 21To Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations forever and ever. Amen (so be it). Ephesians 3:20-21.

Don’t just be encouraged…be brilliantly outrageous and leap into His hands, entrusting him with your utmost and every molecule of your being, every detail of your life! He’s up to the challenge! You will be amazed at what God can do with you, in you. through you and for you! Cuz…He’s God! And nothing is impossible for HIM!

Be Blessed,

Sharon Goodnow

Day 5: Speaking God's Word to the Dry places Of Your Life

Can you hear the sound of faith coming out of your mouth? Are you talking about the promises of God and what He will do for you and others?

42So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Mount Carmel. And he bowed himself down on the earth and put his face between his knees. 43And he said to his servant, "Go up now, and look toward the sea." And he went up and looked and said, "There is nothing." And he said, "Go again," seven times. 44And at the seventh time he said, "Behold, a little cloud like a man’s hand is rising from the sea." And he said, "Go up, say to Ahab, 'Prepare your chariot and go down, lest the rain stop you.'" 45And in a little while the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode and went to Jezreel. 46 And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah, and he gathered up his garment and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel. 1 Kings 18:42-46 (English Standard Version)

Elijah didn’t see the rainfall yet. However, he had faith in God to conceive before he saw it. He's speaking to his servant, telling him to watch, to look and to expect to see God move in his life. He didn't see rain, but he told Ahab, “Get in your chariot and run!", for he heard the sound of rain coming, in faith. Can you see the sound of rain coming in your dry land? Can you feel the presence of God bring new life into your dreams, hopes and prayers?

Elijah's secret to his power was his private prayer life. He puts his face between his knees and prays. In Middle Eastern culture this was a woman's birthing position. Birthing is not for the faint of heart. As we pray, we are birthing dreams and visions, promises and hopes through Gods miracle power.

1. Do you know what it means to birth something in prayer?
2. Have you experienced what it means to press in and pray through?
3. Do you pray once twice or three times and give up cause nothing happens?

Too often that may be our attitude, not so with Elijah. He prayed up to the time of something was birthed. Prayer is hard work. Jesus prayed in the garden with such a birth and intensity that his face perspired great drops of blood.

Do we even know what it means to keep entreating, keep petitioning, and keep knocking? To be like Elijah and not give up. Do you have needs in your family and marriage? Are there needs in your children and job? Are your loved ones sick? Are you in a pressured situation? Press in and birth victories in your life through prayer. Be like Elijah…he was just a man, like us.

17Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. 18Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops. James 5:17-18 (NIV)

God is not a respecter of persons…

What God did for Elijah, He will do for you.

Day 4: Set Your Heart on Things Above- Yolanda Duley

This Morning In my quiet time I was reading the word and opened to this:

1Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. Col. 3:1-2 (NIV)

It seems God was speaking to me on how we are to approach our fasting. It is not to allow our flesh to reside and to draw and make us happy and content on our favorite foods. It is a sacrifice offering to the Lord. It is a fellowship and friendship with Jesus. Did you know that the Israelite s were commanded to bring a cake offering as a friendship offering to God? God knows food is precious to us.

20 Present a cake from the first of your ground meal and present it as an offering from the threshing floor. Numbers 15:20 (NIV)

Let us Give up our desires and comforts, which will touch the heart of God. As a result you will gain power in your prayer time, and you will see Jesus in the power of his might.

11being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully. Col. 1:11 (NIV)

You will Gain more integrity, purity and honesty in your walk with him. Here we are, four days of fasting. Has God spoken to you? Did he touch your spirit? Are you stirred up and able to see God's victory in your life? Are you now stronger to witness God's greatness? Are you ready to talk about Jesus?
Think about these things and as we continue and press forward in agreement with our pastor. I give you this scripture in closing.

17"See to it that you complete the work you have received in the Lord." Col. 4:17

All my prayer and Love,
Yolanda Duley

DAY 3 : Message given from Reverend Rick Thomas

Adrienne and Pastor Yolanda asked me to write down some thoughts of encouragement that will help us to stay focused and to stay the course as we corporately engage in this God birthed, directed, inspired and led Fast. As I began to write down my thoughts I suddenly realized that there are noises in the room that are competing with my most profound thoughts, so much so, that I am finding it very difficult to hear these profound, and I’m sure, awe inspiring words that will move us from where we are to where we need to be…. After further investigation, I find these noises are emanating from the very temple that is currently writing these words to you! So now I will be directing my words of encouragement not only to the readers of this blog but, oh my, to myself as well…. As it should be, I suppose….
Both Zenaida and I have found this to be a time of careful examination of our own spiritual condition as the battle rages with our flesh in not pursuing its wants and desires and pressing into the reason why we are fasting in the first place. As we have pressed through the initial caffeine headaches and lack of satisfaction after gorging ourselves on things that really didn’t make us happy, we notice that time seems to have slowed down so that our flesh can torment us in ever increasing waves every step of the way! But then, the spirit comes rushing to our rescue, reminding us of the reason and purpose and goal of this fast and we are renewed, refreshed, strengthened and encouraged that God is in control and He will accomplish all that He has set out for us to do!!!
Eph. 3:20,21 – Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever! Amen
I will close this blog with one resounding word in the midst of my spirit….REVIVAL!!!!!!!!!

With many blessings and much love,
Reverend Rick Thomas

DAY 1

It is day one of our churches corporate fast. My approach to fasting has always been giving up one thing that I absolutely love. Alternatively, I fasted for several days or even months. I was okay with that until, our pastor challenged us to a Daniel Fast and inspired us as a church body, to engage ourselves. This fast omits all the foods I love and have the freedom to choose and eat whenever I wanted. In my mind , that was a huge commitment to discipline my flesh.

I realize, fasting is a routine of discipline and obedience. Jesus became obedient and disciplined to die on the cross and on the third day rose from the dead so, that whosoever believes in him can have life eternal. It seems his supreme sacrifice was fasting his whole life that I might live. As I think of offering this grand sacrifice of mine. Suddenly, I understand that my fasting is a God idea and not my own. So, where do I find my strength to continue in my commitment?

Luke 2:37 (New International Version)
37and then was a widow until she was eighty-four.[a] She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying.

A one week sacrifice doesn't begin to compare with this woman who gave her life to prayer and fasting. Why did she do that? She wanted to see Jesus in a fresh new way, everyday. I pray that you will gain a greater revelation of the benefits of prayer, fasting and seeking the lord with passion and intensity. May you also, like Anna, Aspire to see Jesus a fresh new way in your life everyday.

Blessings,
Yolanda Duley
